Introduction
Draughts or Checkers is a strategy board game for two players. It is played on an 8×8 grid, similar to chess, with each player starting with 12 pieces. The goal of the game is to capture all of your opponent’s pieces or block them so that they cannot move.
Equipment
To play draughts, you will need a draughts board and 24 round pieces, 12 each of two different colors. The board consists of 64 squares, alternating between two colors.
Setting Up the Game
Each player starts with 12 pieces placed on the dark squares of the board. The pieces should be set up on the 12 closest squares to each player.
Rules of the Game
- Moves: Players take turns moving one of their own pieces. A regular piece can only move diagonally forward to an unoccupied dark square.
- Capturing: If an opponent’s piece is diagonally adjacent to your piece and the square beyond it is vacant, you can jump over the piece and capture it. The captured piece is then removed from the board.
- Multiple Captures: If after a jump, your piece is in a position to jump over another opponent piece, you must continue to do so. This can result in several pieces being captured in a single turn.
- King Pieces: If one of your pieces reaches the last row on your opponent’s side, it becomes a King. King pieces can move and capture diagonally in both forward and backward directions.
- King Capturing: A King can capture an opponent’s piece by jumping over it to an unoccupied square beyond. If it is in a position to continue jumping and capturing, it must do so.
Winning the Game
The game ends when a player either captures all of their opponent’s pieces or blocks them so they cannot make a legal move. If neither player can accomplish this, the game is a draw.
Conclusion
Draughts/Checkers is a game of strategy and planning. It requires players to think ahead and anticipate their opponent’s moves. While the rules are simple, the complexity comes from the nearly endless combinations of moves possible, making every game unique. So, set up your board, call a friend, and start playing!
